The leaves are starting to turn, and Indiana County could be about a week away from the best colors of the season.
According to a report from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Indiana, Jefferson, Armstrong and Westmoreland Counties are in the “Approaching Best Color”, meaning peak color is approximately one week away. Most of the state is in this status, extending to the Northwest, and into the central and east regions. If you want a preview of the best colors of the season, Clearfield County is now in “Peak Color” designation along with Clinton, Somerset and seven other counties in the Northeast region. 20 counties in the southern regions are “starting to change” meaning best colors are about two to three weeks away.
Foresters in the Gallitzin State Forest covering Indiana, Blair and Cambria Counties said while most of the region is still in the early phases, there are some individual trees in best color or near peak. The cooler evenings have helped accelerate the process and better viewing conditions are expected next week.
