The flu season has begun and while the number of cases reported so far in Pennsylvania is low, Indiana County is one of the few which has reported an uptick in the number of people infected with the virus.
On the state’s flu map, Indiana County shows six flu cases so far, all reported between September 29th and October 5th. Cases are added up at the start of each week. Allegheny County, with 22 cases, is the only other county in the western half of the state with lab-confirmed cases. It’s also the most of any county in the commonwealth. Most of the state’s flu activity so far has been in the southeast corner around Philadelphia.
The number of flu cases that appear on the weekly tally can be influenced by a number of factors. The report contains only lab-confirmed cases, and some counties don’t even test for influenza, opting instead to just treat people as if they have it. Also, many people get the flu and don’t seek medical intervention, choosing to just stay home and self-treat.
