The Blairsville Police Department has announced they will take part next week in Operation Safe Stop.
The program is an effort to educate drivers about the laws concerning school buses that are picking up or dropping off children. Passing a school bus when it is stopped with its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended is dangerous and illegal. Law enforcement agencies, school transportation providers, PennDOT and others are teaming up for the awareness effort.
On October 23rd, Blairsville Borough Police will work with Smith Bus Company with roving patrols and enforcement near bus stops. Plus, bus drivers will be documenting anyone they see making any illegal passes during their runs.
Police remind everyone that you need to stop for the bus when the stop arm is extended and the bus’s lights are flashing. Otherwise, you may see the flashing lights of a police car.
