Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate continues to make history as it remained at 3.4 percent in September, marking the 12th consecutive month it went unchanged.
This is the longest streak on record dating back to 1976, according to the state Department of Labor and Industry. The rate also remained well under the national unemployment rate, which fell by one-tenth of a point to 4.1 percent. One year ago, the rate was 3.3 percent.
Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force, which is the estimated number of residents working or looking for work, went down 24,000 over the month to 6,556,000.
Total nonfarm jobs were up 6,800 over the month to a record high of 6,205,000. This also set a record high for the 14th consecutive month. Jobs increased in five of the 11 industry supersectors, with the largest hike coming from leisure and hospitality, which rose by 6,100 jobs.
Countywide statistics will be released later this month.
