The Center for Disease Control reports that tobacco use in middle and high school students across the U.S. is down to its lowest recorded level in 25 years.
According to new data from the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey, 2.25 million students reported the current use of any tobacco product, compared to 2.80 million last year. Hookah usage dropped significantly, going from 2.13 million in 2023 to 1.63 million this year, and e-cigarette usage also dipped to just 5.9 percent of youth users.
Jennifer Cofer with Texas’s M-D Anderson Cancer Center credits a nationwide push to ban smoking around public buildings.
CDC did report an increase in children using nicotine pouches, which became the second most used tobacco product. Other common uses include cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco.
