A resolution that starts an investigation into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association passed the state house yesterday.
The investigation initiated by House Resolution 318 will result in a report and recommendations on the current status, management, structure, policies and finances of the PIAA. State Representative Jim Struzzi, a co-sponsor of the resolution, said that one of the points of the study has been the issue of broadcast and streaming rights between PIAA and the NFHS network, which provides streaming services for sporting events but blocks local broadcasters from streaming the games as well. It’s an issue that Struzzi has been involved with over the last few years.
In 2023, Struzzi had introduced the “Fair Play in Broadcasting Act” and in prior years, Struzzi and several other House members demanded reform from the PIAA.
Other issues to be investigated include name, image and likeness policies; competitive classification formulas; the transfer policy; the process to determine the location of State Championship games and other issues.
The resolution passed by a 152-50 vote. The investigation will be conducted by the House Legislative, Budget and Finance Committee and a report on its findings and recommendations is due to the General Assembly by April 20th of next year.
