The faculty and coach members of APSCUF have voted to affiliate itself with AFT, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.
AFT, formerly the American Federation of Teachers, represents 1.8 million Pre-K to 12th grade teachers, paraprofessionals and other school-related personnel, higher education faculty and staff, government employees on a local, state and federal level, nurses and healthcare workers, and early childhood educators. The move to affiliate will allow APSCUF to do more with students, faculty and staff while better promoting the value of a higher education at the state and national level, according to APSCUF President Kenneth Mash in a news release.
AFT President Randi Weingarten said they and APSCUF share the same goal of accessible, affordable higher education. She added that it will require “fighting for dignity for faculty, resources for our students, and respect for academic freedom.”
While APSCUF has been independent since the 1990’s, it has affiliated with other unions in the past. This agreement will allow APSCUF to remain autonomous with policies, collective bargaining and staff.
