Indiana County is one of 33 counties in the state that is currently under a drought watch.
That watch was issued today by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Westmoreland and Clearfield Counties are also under watch conditions. Those in the drought watch are being asked to voluntarily conserve water and cut back on non-essential use. Acting DEP Secretary Jessica Sirley said that the state has received little rain over the months of September and October, which also capped off a very dry six-month period. She also said that a rainy week may not lift the drought status for an area.
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said that because of the dry conditions, much of the state is also at an elevated wildfire risk and people should use extreme caution if handling fire or avoid any burning as the conditions continue. She encourages people to check the DCNR Wildfire Danger Forecast Map on their website, https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/Communities/Wildfire/Pages/default.aspx
