Indiana Borough Council approved advertising the 2025 budget at their meeting Tuesday night.
The budget itself comes out to more than $6.7 million for next year, with contractual services making up roughly 80 percent of it. Because of this, a tax increase is likely, but the amount of that increase was the main topic of conversation.
Borough Manager Nichole Sipos presented two budget drafts, one containing a one mil increase, which comes out to $151 per household parcel, and the other with a .75 mil increase, and following an hour-long discussion, Council approved advertising the one mil draft by a 5-to-2 vote.
Sipos recommended advertising the one mil draft after collecting needs from all departments, and anything below that rate would reduce funding for fire and emergency services, Shade Tree and the library. She said taking funds away from public safety is not something they want to do.
The draft will go up for approval next month.
In other business, council approved applying for two Local Share Account (LSA) grant applications. One is for the Locust Street Sanitary Sewer Placement Project which contains a 100 percent cash match. The other is for the Street Sweeper Project, which does not contain a cash match.
Those will also go for final approval at the next meeting.
