State police are warning county residents that phone scams have made their way back to the area and scammers are trying to bilk victims of their money.
We reported yesterday of a scam theft report by State Police that happened in late October where a person in Conemaugh Township was deceived into paying $3500 in cash in what was called a “Grandparent Scam”. Another incident was reported on November 7th as a resident of South Mahoning township was deceived into paying $5000 in bitcoin that was sent to the scammer. Another recent incident reported to police had the victim lose $20,000.
In each incident, the scammer impersonated a child or grandchild saying they were involved in an accident and needed them to send cash and that someone would come to the house to collect the money.
As scammers can be savvy, state troopers strongly advise that residents keep up to date on common scams and discuss them with family and friends. Also, law enforcement officers will never call someone to ask for money or payment. People are also asked to verify the legitimacy of suspicious phone calls, emails or text messages, and when in doubt, ignore the call or message and contact a family member or your local law enforcement agency.
