The Veterans Day holiday on Monday will include a special ceremony with a possible adventure for history buffs. It will also cause some schedule adjustments around the area.
The Veterans Day parade will step off at 10:45 AM in downtown Indiana. After the parade and ceremony at the courthouse, a formal dedication will be held for the placement of a plaque honoring the more than 140 Revolutionary War veterans buried in Indiana County’s cemeteries. The plaque contains a QR code that links to a listing of the patriots and their graves’ locations, allowing folks a chance to visit the sites and find the markers. The plaque was a project of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was secured through the America250 Revolutionary Patriot program.
White Township will hold off a day on its leaf collection program, gathering up the bags on Tuesday instead of Monday. There will be one more leaf collection after that, on Monday the 18th. S&T Bank Arena will be closed tomorrow for the morning hours, opening for regular activities at 1:30.
Federal, state, and county offices will be closed, including county courts. Liquor stores will be open as normal and you should check with your bank to find out if it is open.
All of Indiana County’s school districts will be closed on Monday.
As we honor all veterans tomorrow, next spring we will have another occasion to recognize a special class of veterans. March 29th will officially become the Vietnam War Veterans Day in Pennsylvania. More than 15,000 Americans are still listed as missing a result of the war in Vietnam. More than 58,000 Americans died in the conflict.
The bill establishing March 29th as the date on which Vietnam vets would be honored in the commonwealth was introduced by Senator Doug Mastriano, a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
