Another water authority that serves a portion of Indiana County is asking its customers to voluntarily cut back on non-essential water use.
The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County says that it’s not panic time for the authority or its customers. Authority manager Michael Kukura said they are doing this based off of what they learned last December when historically dry conditions at the Beaver Run Reservoir triggered mandatory water conservation efforts. That ended last March when weeks of rain refilled the reservoir.
A lack of recent rainfall led to a drought watch being issued for the Youghiogheny River earlier this month. The river is the source for two MAWC treatment plants.
The authority serves five counties, with all except Armstrong County under drought watch put in place by the PA Department of Environmental Protection.
