The state Department of Human Services last week reported a potential text message scam involving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). DHS says some SNAP participants have gotten a text that claims their EBT card has been deactivated. It directs them to call a number to reactivate it. DHS says it will never text anyone to say their card has been deactivated, and advises that anyone receiving such a text should call their fraud tip line at 1-844-DHS-TIPS (1-844-347-8477).
The Department of Human Services does send informational texts and phone calls to people who receive SNAP, Medicaid, and other benefits, but only from the specific number 1-833-648-1964.
From the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services:
DHS’ text messages will not include:
- Details about a person’s benefits, such as the amount of SNAP they are authorized to receive,
- A request for specific personal information, and/or
- Links to unofficial sites; most DHS texts will direct people to dhs.pa.gov, COMPASS, or a site that ends in .gov or .org.
Pennsylvanians who have questions about whether a call, text, letter, or other communication is legitimate should contact DHS’ Office of Income Maintenance at https://www.pa.gov/en/agencies/dhs/contact/cao-information.html.
