Jury selection for the Ronald Weiss retrial is still on tomorrow’s Indiana County Court schedule, but attorney Malcolm Taylor Johnson on Thursday asked the court for a continuance, casting doubt as to whether the trial will move forward.
Weiss is accused of the 1978 murder of 16-year-old Barbara Bruzda after the two played pool at her father’s bar in Tunnelton. He was convicted in 1997 and ordered to spend life in prison, but the conviction was overturned by a federal court in 2018 and he’s been fighting a retrial ever since. The State Supreme Court denied his last appeal in April.
In September, Johnson filed a sealed motion for a stay and an evaluation of Weiss’s competency to stand trial.
