Officials in some counties in the eastern part of the state are saying that they counted some mail-in ballots that should not have been counted in the very close race between Dave McCormick and Bob Casey.
Prior to the election, the PA Supreme Court ruled that mail-in ballots that did not have a signature or dates should not be included in official tabulations. Officials in Philadelphia, Bucks, Centre and Montgomery Counties are now admitting to counting some of those ballots. Some officials say they are counting the votes so that voters do not feel disenfranchised.
Officials estimate that about 80,000 provisional ballots have yet to be counted in Pennsylvania, which represents less than 2% of the vote. Right now, the state is holding an recount that was triggered when the unofficial results showed less than a half of a percentage point victory for McCormick.
