Operation Safe Holiday is continuing across Pennsylvania and the State Police, the Turnpike Commission and PennDOT came together yesterday to remind people to drive safely at all times.
The operation kicked off on November 11th, when a Click It or Ticket campaign started across the state that will run through December 1st. Statewide statistics from last year showed an estimated 92% of unbelted car occupants were killed in crashes, and the Shapiro Administration said that those lives could be saved if they wore their seatbelt.
There are also sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols from state police that are looking out for intoxicated drivers. That effort is expected to run through the New Year’s holiday. PennDOT data showed that during the 2023 holidays, there were 1061 alcohol-related crashes resulting in 22 deaths and over 600 people injured. During the same timeframe, there were 360 drug-related crashes, resulting in 26 fatalities and 267 suspected serious injuries.
Today is expected to be the busiest travel day as far as the PA Turnpike goes, with over 680,000 drivers expected to take the toll road at some point today.
