IUP has announced what it will do with a $40,000 grant through the state’s “It’s On Us” program to combat campus sexual assault.
The university said that it will use the money in this year’s grant funding for programming that will focus on first-year students, especially in their first few months on campus, which is widely regarded as one of the most vulnerable periods. IUP’s Haven Project director Dr. Jessica Miller said that the transition to college, exposure to new social environments, and unfamiliarity with campus resources definitely heighten the risk of sexual assault. To address the problem, Miller said that they will offer educational programming, including the Green Dot bystander training that will cover topics like consent and reporting options. Alongside that, the university will use the money to provide fun and engaging activities that highlight available resources and reporting procedures.
This marks the seventh year IUP has been selected to receive state “It’s On Us” funding. Over the years, IUP has received $230,000 in It’s On Us PA funding.
