Today marks a National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who died December 29th at the age of 100.
For the past few days, President Carter’s remains have been lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda while government officials and members of the public have paid their respects. A state funeral is scheduled for today at the National Cathedral in Washington, and current President Joe Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy. All living former presidents, including President-Elect Donald Trump, are expected to attend today’s service.
Federal offices will be closed today as their employees will be given the day off except for vital employees for national defense or security. The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular mail operations today and post offices will be closed.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed today as well, but local banks are expected to be open.
