Despite news that Big Lots has been purchased by Gordon Brothers in a deal that will preserve the brand, 64 locations in Pennsylvania, including the one in Indiana, will close.
In a release on Jan. 9 announcing the completion of the deal, Gordon Brothers noted that the move will preserve the brand, keeping hundreds of stores in operation and preventing thousands of layoffs. The purchase in late 2024 enables the transfer of Big Lots’ assets, including stores, distribution centers and intellectual property, to other retailers and companies. As part of the sale, Variety Wholesalers will acquire at least 200 stores.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry is advising people to make purchases at Big Lots using credit cards, so consumers can dispute a purchase, if needed. She also advises people to check on the store’s return or refund polices, as many stores that are going out of business are instituting an “all sales final” rule, check the stores rewards and gift card polices, and before purchasing something to pick up at the store, make sure it is in the store’s inventory.
