Reaction continues to come concerning Governor Josh Shapiro’s budget address.
River Valley Superintendent Philip Martel said in a letter that the Governor’s education budget does not address many problems with the Pennsylvania school system, but instead puts “more taxpayer dollars into failing and underperforming districts, perpetuating a broken system that continues to leave countless students behind.” He said that the most pressing solution is the expansion of school choice, saying that “every child deserves access to high-quality education, regardless of their location.” Martell added that school choice also empowers parents to have a greater role in shaping their child’s future by having them get out of a system that does not serve their needs.
Another point he addressed is consolidation of districts, saying that reducing the number of districts would promote educational equity, reduce waste, cut unnecessary bureaucracy, and make sure funds are used properly.
