Please exercise caution and stay indoors if you can, as much of Indiana County is experiencing freezing rain during the 5 pm hour and it’s expected to continue into the late evening hours.
The purple areas indicate freezing rain, the pink areas indicate a wintry mix, and the turquoise areas indicate snow.
PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit to 45 mph I-80 Eastbound and Westbound. The 45 mph restriction is in effect between the Ohio line and Exit 147: PA 144 Snow Shoe in Center County.
The speed reduction is in addition to the Tier 2 restriction that went into effect at 3:00 PM on I-80 from the I—79 interchange to Exit 173: Lamar (PA 64). Commercial vehicles are restricted to right lane travel only.
Under Tier 2 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
Tractors towing loaded tandem trailers without chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs).
Tractors without trailers.
Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
Motorcycles.
While avoiding or delaying unnecessary travel during winter storms is the safest choice, PennDOT advises motorists to use caution, slow down, pay attention on area roadways, especially during snow squalls or low-visibility conditions that may occur.
Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department’s primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways.
