Starting tomorrow, mask mandates will go into effect for UPMC Hospitals and Outpatient areas.
Masking will be required for patients, visitors, support personnel and staff in patient areas in their facilities. This is part of an effort to stop the spread of respiratory illnesses in health care settings, according to a social media post from the hospital group.
Flu and RSV cases have been surging as of late in Pennsylvania. According to the State Department of Health, close to 100,000 cases of flu have been reported in Pennsylvania this season as of February 1st. The bulk of those cases are in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties and in parts of the Eastern side of the state. Allegheny County has the highest flu case count at 7,204 lab-confirmed cases. By comparison, Indiana County has had 230 cases of lab-confirmed flu for the season.
