Pennsylvania has seen a significant spike in the number of flu cases.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from last Friday showed nearly 50,000 people were admitted to hospitals with influenza since the start of the year. The state is listed in the “high” category for the number of cases since the start of flu season in late September. Pennsylvania’s Department of Health reports that the number of cases as of the end of last week, the state has logged 128,665 cases of lab-confirmed flu. Most of those cases are in Allegheny County, as the department of Health reported 9,516 cases. High levels have also been reported in the southeast corner of the state.
Because of the high levels of flu in Allegheny County, UPMC has ordered masks be worn by patients, visitors, support personnel and staff in patient areas in their facilities.
By comparison, Indiana County has had 310 lab-confirmed cases of flu since the start of the flu season. Indiana Regional Medical Center has also reported less than 100 emergency room visits due to flu since the start of 2025.
