The interim chancellor of the State System of Higher Education is happy with the news from Governor Josh Shapiro’s budget address concerning funding for Pennsylvania-owned schools.
In a post to his blog, interim chancellor Dr. Chrstopher Fiorentino said that the governor’s budget included a 6.5% increase in funding for state system schools, which will allow PASSHE to keep tuition the same for the eighth consecutive year. He compared this development to events that were going on eight years ago, when tuition was still going up, enrollment was falling, funding stagnated and the relationship between PASSHE and the state legislature were strained.
Fiorentino said that for the first time in a decade, student enrollment is stabilizing, retention is improving, and it is more affordable to attend a state system school. He added that while things are going the right direction, more work is needed to sustain the momentum as “higher education is facing more demographic headwinds in the years ahead,” but the schools are better equipped to face the challenges and live up to their mission.
