Issued by PennDOT at 11 am
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise caution when driving as another winter storm moves through the commonwealth. Various speed and vehicle restrictions have been or will be implemented throughout the storm.
Currently there is a speed limit reduction to 45 mph with commercial vehicles in the right lane only for the following roadways in District 10 which covers Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana and Jefferson Counties:
- I-79 between Exit 147B: US 6 – US 322 West/US 19 South Conneaut Lane and Exit 54: PA 50 Bridgeville.
- US 22 between Exit US 11 North – Indiana and Exit I-99 South – Bedford
- I-80 between the Ohio state line and Exit 133: PA 53 Kylertown/Phillipsburg. I-80 will have a Tier 1 restriction going into place at 12:00 PM from the I-79 interchange to Exit 173.
Under Tier 1 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
- Tractors without trailers.
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers.
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers.
- Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV.
- Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers.
- Recreational vehicles/motorhomes.
- School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches.
- Motorcycles.
PennDOT crews have been treating roadways ahead of the storm to help prevent ice from forming a bond with the pavement. However, salt does not resolve all risks, and drivers may encounter icy spots on the roadway. With freezing temperatures, roads that look wet may actually be icy, and extra caution is needed when approaching bridges and highway ramps where ice can form.
