The Pirates welcome the full squad to Bradenton for the first official team workout of spring training today, and the big question is the old cliché: Who’s on first?
With new acquisition Spencer Horwitz out six to eight weeks, the Pirates will try to fill the hole with a variety of players, including Jared Triolo, a Gold Glove winner in both the minors and last year in the majors. Others for manager Derek Shelton to sort through include Billy Cook, Darik Hall, Matt Gorski, Malcom Nunez, and even a surprise candidate, outfielder Jack Suwinski.
Meanwhile, Shelton and general manager Ben Cherington have another big decision to make with the fifth spot in the starting rotation up for grabs.
The top four spots of the rotation are rock solid, with Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, and Bailey Falter. Shelton says Skenes continues to impress with his approach to the game.
Shelton likes the versatility of the contenders for the fifth starter, especially newcomer Caleb Ferguson, a lefty who can start or relieve.
The Pirates cleared a roster spot for free agent signee Tommy Pham by placing reliever Dauri Moreta on the 60-day injured reserve list. Moreta had Tommy John surgery last year and is “not close” to facing live batters, according to Cherington. He’s throwing bullpen sessions and may face live batters later in spring training.
The first Grapefruit League game is this Saturday against the Orioles.
