Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson joined three others in introducing the “Simplifying Veterans Assistance Act” yesterday.
The act is meant to address some problems with the VA Department’s Grant and Per Diem program application process by ordering the department to provide guidance and best practices for entities seeking grant money. The bill would also ensure the VA provides at least two informational sessions so organizations can understand the application process, ask questions and get help from staffers.
The grant and per diem program provides funding to community organizations that offer traditional housing and supportive services to homeless veterans. It has helped vets across the country achieve housing and financial stability, leading to independence and success.
Thompson said that the act will cut some of the red tape associated with the process and make sure that “no veteran is left behind due to the bureaucratic process.”
The bill does have the support of the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans and the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
