UPDATE AT 9:48 AM: A third vehicle was involved in the crash, and Greensburg-Salem School District officials say the driver in that car was a district student on his way to school. That student was identified only as a 17-year-old, but they are expected to be okay. They are being examined at an area hospital.
WHAT WE FIRST REPORTED
Traffic on Route 22 is backed up this morning as authorities in Westmoreland County investigate a fatal crash involving a school van.
The Greensburg-Salem School District confirmed the crash was between a DMJ school van and a tractor trailer at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 819 at 7:15 AM. No students were on board at the time, but the driver of the van was killed. The van was on a route for the district in Salem Township.
Route 22 near the crash scene has been closed in both directions so state police and the Westmoreland County Coroner’s office can investigate. Drivers are asked to seek alternate routes.
