Senate leaders are sharing their reactions to Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year, with several pointing towards “abundant flaws” that could lead to budget shortfalls and tax increases in the near future.
Shapiro’s proposal features a 7.5 percent increase in spending and Senate Republicans have previously projected that the increase could create a shortfall of more than $27 billion between 2025 and 2030. Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman last week mentioned that he does not believe the budget will pass by the June 30th deadline, but he did say there was cooperation by other state agencies to help reduce exorbitant amounts of spending.
Some key points Senate GOP members made in their initial reactions were Shapiro’s “unrealistic new revenues,” which they say would suppress future human services and education costs; overstating baseline revenue growth; elimination of programs; tax credit revisions; and other concerns.
