Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday recently joined a bipartisan coalition of 38 state Attorneys General and the U.S. Justice Department in proposing an end to Google’s illegal monopoly over internet search engines and restoring competition to consumers nationwide.
If approved, the proposal would prohibit Google from making payments to Apple and Android to maintain their presence as the default search engine on their respective devices. The revised Proposal Final Judgement is similar to what the other states and the Justice Department offered in November in an initial filing with the same federal judge who, last year, ruled in a landmark decision that Google is maintaining the aforementioned monopoly.
The coalition would be entitled to a preliminary review of Google’s future financial interests in online search and generative AI competitors for a limited time to ensure the company cannot use the same playbook with new technologies.
A hearing on the proposed remedies is scheduled to start April 21 and end by May 9.
