Homer City Redevelopment has confirmed that the iconic smokestacks and towers of the Homer City Generating Station will be demolished this weekend.
According to a news release, the company’s contractor has received a permit to move forward with the implosion and felling of the structures from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. According to the permit, demolition is slated for 7:30 Saturday morning. All access points to the site will be closed off before the start of the first demolition, with on-site security patrolling the site and State Police looking after the surrounding roadways. They will also close off all hiking and ATV trails.
An exclusion zone of 3000 feet from each charge will be set up for the public, and 2000 feet for essential employees. Anyone interested in viewing the demolition must do so outside those parameters. Due to safety concerns, HCR cannot accommodate the public on its property or in close proximity to view the implosion.
The DEP is regulating the blast and has reviewed the plan in efforts to protect the public and surrounding businesses. Renda Media is awaiting a reply from the department regarding any dangers to the general population and we expect a response later today.
