Crews are on-site for the implosion of the smokestacks and towers of the closed Homer City Generating Station.
According to the timeline from Frontier Industrial Corporation, access points to the area will be closed off at 7:15 this morning, and the first of three warning sirens will be sounded. The second will come at 7:25 and the third will be at 7:29. If all stations are clear, the weather is ok and there are no unauthorized people in the zone, the charges will be detonated at 7:30 to bring the towers down.
As far as the aftermath of the implosion goes, Central Indiana County Water Authority and Homer City Borough employees will be testing city water in the areas of Coral, Graceton and Smith Road after the implosion to make sure it is still safe. If there are any problems, they will pass the word along on social media. They also have a plan in place for potable water and for fire protection in case things go wrong.
State police have set up patrols along Route 119 in the center township area, and will provide traffic control and related duties as needed. If you plan to observe the demolition, they ask you follow the rules of the road and be respectful of private property. They also ask you to keep roads clear and open for travel.
The public will not be allowed at the site or in close proximity due to safety concerns. Homer City Redevelopment LLC said that there will be an exclusion zone of 3000 feet from each charge in place, and all access areas to the blast zone, including hiking trails, all-terrain vehicle trails, secondary and primary roads will be secured, and access will be prohibited until after the process has been completed. Any trespassers will be prosecuted.
