A new report by the online site SmartAsset.com ranks Pennsylvania’s counties by household income, and Indiana County does not fare well. Using 2024 data, the county ranks 56th out of 67 counties in “overall wealth”, which considers median income, investment income, and median home value. The median income of Indiana County households is $57,170, which places us 59th. Investment income ranks 37th and median home value ranks 49th.
Neighboring Cambria County ranks 65th overall; Armstrong is 48th; Clearfield is 61st; Jefferson is 59th; Westmoreland ranks 24th.
Chester County ranks first in the state in overall wealth with a median income of $118,574, investment income of $123,990, and median home value of $533,436. Nine of the ten most wealthy counties are in the eastern half of the state, almost all of them in the southeast corner. Among western Pennsylvania counties, only Butler County ranks in the top ten in the state, at number 8.
Cameron County, in northcentral PA, ranks 67th, with a median household income of $46,186.
