Citing an unnamed source, multiple media outlets report that the Pirates’ Jared Jones will not need surgery on his sore right elbow, but won’t be throwing a baseball for the next six weeks.
Jones told the Pirates he was feeling pain in the throwing elbow on March 16th and was immediately shut down for the rest of spring training. Imaging tests show no ligament damage, according to the unnamed source. If all goes well, he will begin throwing in the second or third week of May and require four to six weeks to build up his innings, with two to three minor league rehab starts, before rejoining the Pirates. The Pirates have not confirmed the reports.
Carmen Mlodzinski has already been named to replace Jones in the Pirates’ rotation.
The Pirates open the season tomorrow afternoon (4:10 first pitch) in Miami.
