This week, the Senate Education Committee took a significant step to preserve fairness in women’s sports. The committee passed Senate Bill 9, known as the Save Women’s Sports Act, which now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
The bill would require public schools and colleges to designate sports teams as male, female, or coed. Only biological females would be allowed to compete on teams designated for women. Senate Bill 9 also includes provisions allowing students to take legal action if they’re harmed by violations of the rule.
Supporters say the bill is necessary to ensure that female athletes have a fair and equal opportunity in high school and college sports, protecting the integrity and competitive balance that has been fought for since the passing of Title IX decades ago.
