Local officials continue to react to yesterday’s announcement concerning a natural gas-driven power plant going into the former Homer City Generating Station site.
Officials with Homer City Redevelopment and Kiewit Power said yesterday that the $10 billion facility will not only power 13 states and Washington, DC, but also power several AI-driven hyperscale data centers that will be set up on-site. The plant is expected to employ 10,000 direct on-site construction workers and when it opens, it will provide 1,000 jobs for the region.
Homer-Center Superintendent Ralph Cecere said how much of a financial impact it will have on the district remains unknown, but he is confident it will be a positive one for the district.
Audio PlayerCenter Township Supervisor Matt Housholder said the news was exciting and he was also happy about the potential lift it would give to the township and the school.
Audio PlayerThe facility will tap into natural gas from the Marcellus Shale formation and utilize existing infrastructure to connect to the PJM and NYISO power grids, water access and substations. Construction is expected to start later this year, and power generation could start by 2027.
This plant will consume massive amounts of water and throw a ton of pollution in the air. The local population will see little to no benefit. It will not creat 1000 jobs. This peaceful, beautiful community is about to change forever and not in a good way.
