The State System of Higher Education Board of Governors will meet on Thursday in Harrisburg, with Governor Shapiro’s budget address expected to be a hot topic. In February, the governor proposed grouping the State System’s ten universities in with the state’s fifteen public community colleges with a new governance structure and a budget figure this year of $975 million. The State System schools had already asked for $661 million just for themselves.
Shapiro’s proposal would also cap tuition for median-income families at $1,000 per semester and increase PHEAA grants by $1,000 per student at both State System schools and community colleges. He also proposes a performance-based funding formula for those schools and the state-related universities.
Expect an update as well this week on the State System’s search for a new chancellor.
APSCUF, the faculty union of the State System, wrapped up its two-day Legislative Assembly in Harrisburg yesterday.
