Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is looking to stop drug smuggling in federal prisons.
Fetterman, a Democrat, and Republican West Virginia Senator Jim Justice have teamed up to introduce the Bureau of Prisons Security Check and Action against Narcotics in Mail Act. The bill, also known as the BOP SCAN Mail Act, would require the Bureau to develop and implement a digital scanning system that would detect fentanyl and other synthetic drugs being smuggled by mail.
Fetterman’s office says inmate overdose deaths at federal prisons have increased by 600 percent over the past two decades.
