RealID regulations will go into effect in one month, and driver’s license facilities will be open some extra days to deal with the last minute rush.
PennDOT will open 57 license centers, including the one at the Indiana Mall, today and each Monday in April and May 5th from 8:30 AM to 4:15 PM in an effort to drive down any lines and delays. The one exception is April 21st, when all state offices are closed for the Easter holiday. If you go to the Indiana Mall location, you will get your new license within 15 business days after getting your documents scanned. There are some offices across the state that will give you your license the same day. A complete list of open locations can be found on PennDOT’s RealID website.
While not mandatory for all residents, a RealID or Passport will be required to board a domestic commercial flight starting May 7th. It would also be necessary when entering a military base or any federal facility that requires federally acceptable ID at the door. It will not be needed for driving, voting, accessing hospitals, going to the post office, accessing federal courts or applying or receiving federal benefits.
To get your license upgraded to be RealID-compliant, you need to bring documents showing you are a legal U.S. Citizen (a birth certificate or passport), proof of a social security number (social security card, W-2 or pay stub), and two proofs of Pennsylvania residency (current unexpired license or state photo ID, vehicle registration, utility bill, auto insurance card, etc.). If your name has changed, you must also bring official documentation of that change.
