Shelton says it’s been difficult to get two of his best bats into the lineup since the start of the season. With Bryan Reynolds unable to throw due to a triceps injury, he’s been DH’ing, impacting Andrew McCutchen’s playing time.

For this afternoon’s series finale, the Pirates send Mitch Keller [1-1] to the mound for his third start, coming off a rough night last Friday, when he lasted only three-and-two-thirds innings against the Yankees and gave up seven earned runs. He’ll be opposed by the Cards’ Erick Fedde [1-1]. Airtime is 12:10 with first pitch at 12:35 on WCCS.
The Pirates are mourning the loss of former pitcher Octavio Dotel, who died at age 51 Monday night when a roof collapsed at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic. Dotel was rescued but died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. At least 44 people died, including former Washington National Tony Blanco, the father of current Pirates prospect Tony Blanco Jr.
PROSPECT WATCH
Checking in with the Pirates’ top prospects, pitcher Bubba Chandler threw four shutout innings in his second start for Indianapolis, striking out eight, giving up just a hit and two walks. Henry Davis had two hits in the 4-2 loss to Louisville. David Bednar worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning with two strikeouts.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona relievers gave up four runs over two innings of work in a 6-5 loss to Akron. Termarr Johnson hit a three-run homer for the Curve and catcher Shawn Ross had two hits.
The Curve have not named their starter for tonight.
