While state government offices are open on Good Friday, there is work going on to make it a state-recognized holiday.
The measure was introduced by Senator Doug Mastriano, who said that Christians acknowledge the holiday with fasting, mourning, prayer and worship. He said that this would allow the state to align with schools, courts and offices that already close or work on limited schedules on the holy day, and it would also enable families to observe the day without professional or academic conflict.
Currently, New Jersey, Delaware, North Carolina, Texas and Kentucky observe Good Friday as a state holiday.
