In an item posted to its website (indianafire.com) on Friday, the Indiana Fire Association cautions that while grass and leaves are turning green again, it is still dry outside and people should not burn on windy days and should never leave fires unattended.
Sometimes even that is not enough to prevent wildfires. A fire on Friday is an example.
The fire company says they were called to a brush fire along Old Route 56 near the Crete Presbyterian Church and came upon an area of approximately twenty-by-fifty feet that had already burned, with the wind still driving the flames. A tree had fallen on some electric lines, which were still intact, but the tree had caught fire and dropped some flaming wood on the ground below. Firefighters were quickly able to beat the fire back into the burned area and the brush truck then arrived to soak down the area with water. REA crews then arrived to take care of its lines and remove the tree.
