The Public Utility Commission will hold a hearing this week to “explore the impact of data centers and other large load customers on the state’s electric grid.” It’s an en banc hearing, meaning it will be held by the full Commission rather than a panel of commissioners.
The PUC says it is specifically looking at how to approach “large-load” energy demand such as Homer City Redevelopment’s $10.2 billion project to construct and operate a natural gas power plant and associated AI data centers while at the same time “protecting existing utility customers.”
Among those testifying will be representatives of potential large-load customers, electric distribution companies, and consumer and public advocates.
The hearing will be Thursday at 1 PM in Hearing Room One at the Commonwealth Keystone Building in Harrisburg. It will also be aired on the PUC’s live streaming channel.
