The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says that most of the Commonwealth is currently at risk of a wildfire, including Indiana and the surrounding counties.
According to their Wildfire Danger Forecast Map, 61 of the state’s 67 counties are in the High Risk category. The remaining six, in the northwest corner, are in the moderate risk category. A lack of rainfall, low humidity and the warm temperatures have kept the ground and grass very dry, to the point where a minor spark could set off a major fire. The Commission says this time of year, along with the Autumn months of October and November are peak seasons for wildfires.
While burn bans are not in effect in Indiana County, people are being advised by local fire departments to be careful if they have to burn, or to not burn at all to reduce the brush fire risk.
Speaking of brush fires, Indiana County 911 reported it’s 62nd brush fire call of the year yesterday, as the Glen Campbell fire department was sent out at 8:11 PM to Cush Creek Road in Montgomery Township for a brush fire. Details on that call have not been released
