PennDOT Drivers License Centers across the commonwealth, including the one in the Indiana Mall, will be open today to help people upgrade their license or state-issued photo ID to a federally-accepted Real ID.
Starting May 7th, a Real ID will be needed to board a domestic commercial flight, enter a federal building where an ID is required, or to enter a military base. A Real ID upgrade is not needed for driving, voting, to access hospitals or federal courts, apply for or receive federal benefits, or to visit the post office.
People are advised when they come, they will need to bring proof of identity or lawful status, like a birth certificate, passport or certificate of citizenship; proof of a social security number; two documents to prove Pennsylvania residency like utility bills, an unexpired license or car registration; and proof of any legal name changes like marriage certificate or court order approving the name change. Those documents will be scanned into the database today, and you can pay for your renewed license and upgrade today. For those going to the Indiana Mall license center, the new ID will be mailed within 15 business days.
Two more Real ID days are set for May 5th and 12th.
