First baseman Spencer Horwitz appears to be on the fast track to Pittsburgh. After wrist surgery forced him to miss spring training and the first month of the season, Horwitz spent most of last week in Bradenton hitting and fielding, and finally made his game debut yesterday, playing for Double-A Altoona, where he was 1-for-2 with a walk in the Curve’s 4-1 win over Chesapeake. On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS, Pirates assistant general manager Bryan Stroh said it’s “probable” Horwitz will take some swings at Indianapolis before he makes his Pirates debut.
Stroh also said second baseman Nick Gonzalez is cleared for full baseball activities to begin this week as he comes back from a fractured ankle, Endy Rodriguez will see a hand specialist and take another week to ten days before he can come back, and reliever Justin Lawrence will seek a second opinion on his sore elbow. There was nothing new on pitcher Jared Jones.
