With no official court pronouncements following a status conference last month for Ronald Weiss, Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco has scheduled another status conference for this Tuesday. Weiss is facing a retrial for the murder of 16-year-old Barbara Bruzda of Tunnelton in 1978. He was convicted of the murder in 1997 and sentenced to death, a sentence that was later commuted to life in prison without parole. But in 2018 a federal judge overturned the verdict on the basis of prosecutorial misconduct by the state attorney general’s office. He was ordered released but immediately re-arrested on the same charges.
The wheelchair-bound Weiss is currently in SCI Laurel Highlands, where he was sent after severe health problems that caused him to be placed on a ventilator last year. His trial is scheduled for November.
