Multiple tributes will be paid to those who died 23 years ago today in the 9/11 terror attacks on New York, Washington DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
One of those tributes is the annual IUP memorial ceremony that pays tribute to three IUP alumni who were lost in the attack on the World Trade Center in New York: Donald Jones, William Moskal and William Sugra. The keynote speaker will be IUP Alumnus and Foundation for IUP board president James Leda, who was working about a block away from the World Trade Center. The ceremony will be held at 11:10 AM during the school’s Common Hour in front of the 9/11 memorial.
Tonight, another tribute will be held as people will climb the steps at the Indiana County Public Safety Academy. Peter Yacavone, one of the events organizers said that it takes about 37 trips up the tower to simulate the 110 stories firefighters in New York climbed to help those in the World Trade Center. Yacavone said the event is open to the public and several different groups have taken part in the past.
The event is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM tonight at the facility on Fire Academy Road.
