There was plenty of grousing yesterday at PNC Park, with the Pirates dropping two veterans, including the popular Rowdy Tellez, and then going out and getting blasted again as they opened their final homestand.
Joe Block recaps a tough night at the ballpark. (7-3 loss to the Brewers.)
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates played hard, as exemplified by Brian Reynolds’ all-out effort on a diving catch in left field.
Shelton appreciated the way starter Bailey Falter worked this year, even though he struggled last night.
Game two of the series is tonight. The Pirates will send Luis Ortiz [6-6, 3.43 ERA] to the mound for his final start of the year to face Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta [11-8, 3.69 ERA]. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
General manager Ben Cherington says money had nothing to do with the Pirates designating Rowdy Tellez for assignment just four plate appearances before he would have earned a $200,000 bonus. He said, “No factor at all. Zero,” when questioned about it. He also claimed he was not concerned about whether the move would affect the Pirates’ ability to attract free agents in the future.
In addition to Tellez, the Bucs also DFA’d outfielder Michael A. Taylor. They called up infielder Liover Peguero and outfielder Joshua Palacios from Indianapolis.
