A Guatemala man is due in court today for a preliminary hearing concerning an incident in Blairsville in August.
22-year-old Rony Gomez Lopez is due before Indiana County District Judge Robert Bell Sr. today at 10:30 AM. He is charged with endangering the welfare of children, fleeing or eluding police, simple assault, evading arrest on foot, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and DUI. Blairsville Police said on August 25th, officers were called out at 8:30 PM for a report of a person jumping out of a moving vehicle near South Spring Street. Gomez Lopez returned to the scene, and police recognized the van from a description provided by eyewitnesses. When they tried to stop the van, he quickly fled. He would later hit a retaining wall along East Brown Street before fleeing on foot for a few blocks. Police eventually used a taser to subdue him. Police found a three-year-old child in the van.
The person who jumped out of the van said he hit her and she and an infant with her fell out of the van due to the door not being fully shut. The mother and the three-year-old found in the van were taken to Forbes Hospital while the infant was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital.
This marks the third attempt at a preliminary hearing, as the other two attempts were continued.
